                    Kondowe and Karonga, fl. & fr. viii.1896, Whyte s.n. (K, 
                    holotype, two sheets).

                  InformationPerennial herb, with a woody rhizomatous root c. 
                  1.5 cm in diameter.Stems glabrous, usually simple, up to c. 80 
                  cm high, often decumbent and then rooting in leaf 
                  litter.Leaves to 16 × 7 cm, obovate, tapering at the base into 
                  a winged petiole to c. 1 cm long, midrib keeled on the lower 
                  surface, the upper or both surfaces with stiff, scattered 
                  hairs; stipules glandular, 0.5 mm in diameter.Cymes axillary, 
                  2–3-forked; peduncles glabrous, up to 10 cm long, cyme 
                  branches 0.5–2 cm long; bracts joined in a bract-cup to c. 14 
                  × 20 mm, nodding and enveloping the cyathium, notched to 
                  nearly halfway between rounded lobes, creamy-white with green 
                  veining, midribs prominent.Cyathia c. 4 × 5 mm, with 
                  cup-shaped involucres; glandular rim c. 1.25 mm high, white; 
                  lobes 1.5 × 1.5 mm, rounded, denticulate.Male flowers: 
                  bracteoles few, c. 2.5 mm long, filamentous; stamens c. 4 mm 
                  long.Female flower: styles 1.5 mm long, joined to halfway, 
                  deeply bifid at the apex.Capsule 5.5 × 5 mm, acutely lobed, 
                  angles ridged, smooth, exserted on a reflexed pedicel c. 6 mm 
                  long.Seeds 2.5 × 1.25 mm, oblong, 4-angled, minutely 
                  verrucose, grey with pale brown warts; caruncle 1 mm in 
                  diameter, cap-like, shortly stipitate, yellow.
